These lands were initially inhabited by the Picunches, which were conquered by the Incas, and who would then be pursued by Diego de Almagro. In 1541 Pedro de Valdivia takes possession of the city, annihilating its history and on its ruins ordered the foundation of Santiago of the New Extreme.
